La Conchiglia Capri

The Libreria La Conchiglia first opened in 1982, in a small shop in the historic center of Capri, and, in no time at all, was to become an important point of cultural exchange and reflection for artists, writers and intellectuals. Together with the first exhibitions of paintings, photography and graphics, a series of events linked to important names in international literature began to materialize. Soon, La Conchiglia was organizing book presentations and meetings with authors of the caliber of Raffaele La Capria, Aldo Busi, Fernanda Pivano, Fabrizia Ramondino, Isabel Allende, Luciano De Crescenzo, Carmen Covito, Giampaolo Ugarli and Laura Lilli.

The concept of the island of Capri as "laboratory of ideas and culture" led to the foundation in 1989 of Edizioni La Conchiglia. The publishing company's editorial philosophy went far beyond the sentimental desire to revive the literary legend of Capri, rather it aimed to be a driving force in the promotion of culture and cultural enterprises both on and off the island.

Today Edizioni La Conchiglia presents a catalogue of works by important exponents of the Italian and world literary scene; featuring authors of the past, such as Edwin Cerio, Norman Douglas, Compton Mackenzie, Reiner Maria Rilke, Axel Munthe and Somerset Maughan (all of whom were deeply tied to the history of the island), to contemporary writers such as Sergio Lambiase, Roberto Ciuni, Vittorio Strada, Carlo Knight, Raffaele La Capria and Lea Vergine.

In 1996, La Conchiglia Libri & Arte was opened in Capri's fashionable Via Camerelle. The shop contains an impressive selection of gouaches, period prints and 19th century artworks, and provides a unique venue for touring photographic and graphic exhibitions.

Location

La Conchiglia's main bookshop is situated in the historic center of Capri, just steps away from the Piazzetta, on the picturesque Via le Botteghe, 12.
