Itinerary 5 – Torre Materita, Punta Carena and the lighthouse

To get to Punta Carena, one can either take a bus or taxi from Anacapri, or go by foot, although walkers should be aware that the route, as well as being extremely beautiful, is also quite long.
To the right hand side of the carriageway is the Materita tower, built in 1378 by the Carthusian monks to protect the population from the pirate invasions.
The Materita Tower was purchased by Axel Munthe, who write his famous book “The History of San Michele” here. He chose the building for the protection it provided against the light which, as a consequence of his ill health, caused the author great discomfort at his Villa San Michele, which, ironically, had been built by the Swedish physician so as to be "inundated with light".
To the left there is a cistern which it is thought dates back to the Roman period.
The road comes to an end at Punta Carena with its magnificent lighthouse. The perfect spot where to enjoy a swim, with a number of fashionable bathing establishments. There is no beach but rather iron ladders leading in to the water from the terraces.
The Punta Carena Lighthouse is approximately a hundred and fifty years old and, in the Mediterranean, is second only to the Lighthouse of Genoa for its powers of illumination.
