Itinerary 5 - Via Roma - Marina Piccola

Capri Via Roma Torre Saracena Marina Piccola Marina Piccola Marina Piccola

Departing from the Piazzetta of Capri, one proceeds along Via Roma until arriving at Due Golfi.
Once known as “belvedere delle Parate”, the present name Due Golfi is inspired by the view of both northern and southern seas.
The roundabout at the center of the open area regulates the road traffic and from here one chooses whether to proceed to the left along Via Marina Piccola which leads to the bay of the same name, to the right for Marina Grande, or to the center towards Anacapri.
Marina Piccola can be reached either by following Via Mulo, or along the main carriageway, both enjoyable walks.
Following the tarmac road one can observe the eastern face of Monte Solaro. Here one can admire the villas with their splendid gardens, belonging to foreign artists, who, at the start of the twentieth century fell in love with the bay and isolated beach of Marina Piccola.
Of particular note are the Casa del Solitario built for Edwin Cerio; Villa Casa Mia, once belonging to Enrico Marchesano; the pinewood planted by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, exponent of the futurist movement; Villa la Giulianella, the last podestà of Capri, Count Germano Ripandelli; and the historic bathing establishment La Canzone del Mare. This latter, opened by the English singer Grace Fields and built by extending the site of an old blockhouse, was extremely fashionable in the nineteen seventies.
The road ends in a small open area with steps leading down onto the beach. A few steps lead to the Church of St Andrea, commissioned by husband and wife Ugo and Emma Andreas in 1900. Continuing the descent one arrives at the beach and the Scoglio delle Sirene, identified by numerous scholars as Homer’s flowered meadow on the sea , where the Sirens awaited the nearing of the sailors
Visitors can swim here and sunbathe on the public beach or those belonging to the numerous bathing establishments.
