Capri - Descent to Marina Grande by foot. Church of St. Costanzo. Palazzo a Mare. Baths of Tiberius

From the Medieval entrance of Capri, and more precisely from under the Clock tower of the Piazzetta, one accesses Via Acquaviva, a road built with large shallow steps, designed for use by the mules and donkeys transporting goods and people to the town center.
In the vestibule, featuring a pointed arch on the side of the Piazzetta, and rounded arch on the opposite side, there is a canvas depicting St Sebastian. There is also a draw-bridge
At the end of Via Acquaviva, walkers cross the road and continue along Via S. Costanzo, following the carriageway until reaching the Church of St Costanzo.
During this stretch of the itinerary, looking towards the clock tower, one can observe the whole of the ancient town center: the Greek walls on which the houses of Via Longano were built, the view of the Church of the Santissimo Salvatore and the ex convent of the Teresian nuns.
The Church of San Costanzo was, until 1596, the bishop’s residence, then a church, occupied first by the British, then by the French and re-opened as an ecclesiastical building in 1816.
Following on along Via Palazzo a Mare, an extremely narrow road laid on top of the ancient Roman track, one skirts the fortress compound with its 25.000 meter square gardens, various lodgings for guests and splendid sea view terraces. Beyond the old sports ground, in a spectacular position on the cliffs edge and where all past generations of Caprian footballers played, one descends a flight of steps
thus arriving in the area of Tiberius’s Baths. This was once the setting, in ancient times, for Tiberius’s luxurious coastal villa complete with swimming pools, nymphaeums and gardens, of which only a very few ruins remain.
