If you've only got a couple of hours to visit the island of Capri and want to take that classic shot of the sea and the Faraglioni before you leave, head to the Gardens of Augustus.

How to Get to the Gardens of Augustus and Via Krupp

It's easy! From the Piazzetta of Capri, simply take Via Vittorio Emanuele to Via Federico Serena and then Via Matteotti.

Close to the center and only steps away from the Charterhouse of San Giacomo, the Gardens of Augustus are comprised of a series of panoramic flower-decked terraces overlooking the Faraglioni on the one side and the Bay of Marina Piccola and Via Krupp on the other.

Entrance to the Gardens of Augustus costs EUR 1.5 (free for children under 12).

Opening times:

Via Krupp

In the early 20th century, German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp commissioned the engineer Emilio Mayer to design and build a pathway which would link Marina Piccola, where he habitually moored his yacht each summer, with the area surrounding the Charterhouse of San Giacomo and the Gardens of Augustus - close to his suite at the Grand Hotel Quisisana.

To scale the roughly 100 meter drop, the engineer cut a series of hairpin bends into the rock, set so close together that they appear almost to overlap. (Important Update: This switchback pathway is currently closed due to a danger of falling rocks.) Make your way down by foot to reach Marina Piccola and, if you don't fancy the return hike uphill, travel back to the center by bus!
