Boasting an incredibly panoramic position on the north-eastern slopes of Anacapri, Villa San Michele was built by the Swedish physician and author, Axel Munthe, towards the end of the 19th century. The site, some 300 meters above sea level, was previously occupied by an ancient Roman villa, the remains of which can still be seen in the gardens.

Munthe constructed Villa San Michele so as to house his impressive collection of classical Roman, Etruscan and Egyptian artefacts, including a head of the Medusa, a marble bust of Emperor Tiberius, and an Egyptian sphinx.

The gardens of the villa, home to a great variety of Mediterranean plants and a charming little mediaeval chapel, which Munthe restored himself, are as beautiful as any of the exhibits inside the museum. From here, a magnificent view of the Bay of Naples can be seen.

History, Beauty, and Breathtaking Views”

Visiting Villa San Michele in Atrani was an unforgettable experience. Walking through the beautifully maintained gardens while learning about its rich history was truly magical. The park is immaculately kept, and every corner seems to whisper stories from the past, with information available in both Italian and English. The climb involves quite a few steps, and parking isn’t easy to find (if it exists at all — we might have just missed it), but judging by the other tourists we met, everyone seemed to arrive via those steps. The view towards Capri is simply poetic – the island rising from the sea like a dream, bathed in golden light. Almost every spot here is picture-perfect, offering countless opportunities for stunning photos. A truly wonderful experience that blends nature, history, and breathtaking scenery.

The most beautiful garden/park in Italy 🍀

Before visiting Capri&Anacapri we decided to visit the mansion and garden created by Axel Munthe and "prepared" our visit. Outstanding visit, my recommendation: read about the history of the house and its architect/"creator" A.Munthe. So many special things to discover and enjoy. What we didn't like = 1) very expensive entrance ticket 12 Euro pp! 2) extremly expensive caféteria! 3) souvenir shop, seems to be ruled by Swedish people (because of A.Munthe... maybe), 2 Swedish customers received a 8 Euro "present"/book (both bought one book each), when I paid I didn't receive one 😱, when I complained the 2 ladies at the cashdesk had "excuses" and they had fun, laughing out loud ... no 8 Euro book with my 28 Euro book purchase ha ha "not all animals are equal" 🥴

Très belle villa avec un jardin magnifique vue époustouflante sur la mer. . Diverses variétés de fleurs plus belles les unes que autres.

From the outside, I didn't expect much from this museum, but boy was I delighted with our experience. Whilst the history element is present and interesting to a point, the Villa itself and the beauty of the house, gardens and exceptional views are the shining star. Certainly worth the ticket price. It doesn't take long to explore, but it was comfortably quiet, even on a busy day in Capri town, and offered some unique photo opportunities. I'd recommend this to anyone visiting Capri for a quiet and beautiful hour or so.
